First Week of MTC

Oi! A lot has happened since last p-day so I'll try not to make this one super long but it's going to be a long one. The food here isn't too bad, but it is the exact same thing every day, so it does get a little repetitive. For breakfast every morning we get a ham and cheese sandwich and fake powder eggs. Lunch and dinner are almost always rice, beans, and some sort of mystery meat. It normally depends on the day for what the meat is but half of the time I have no idea what I am eating. The best part of every meal is definitely the Brazilian soda called Guaraná.

We have gone to the temple 3 times already. Twice to the Campinas temple and once to the São Paulo temple. I don't think I realized how big São Paulo was until it took us an hour and a half to drive to the São Paulo temple from the MTC. Going to the temple has been awesome though and it has offered much needed peace during our busy MTC schedule. The ride is always exciting though because all of the buses and vans we have been in are stick shifts. Luckily though the drivers have only stalled the engine twice.

We also got to watch all of the sessions of conference (although we had to watch the Saturday evening session Sunday morning because of the time difference). I could write forever about conference, so I'll just write about some of my favorite quotes and why I like them. And don't judge me if it's not perfect because I had to try to write them down as I listened through my ear buds because they played it in Portuguese. Elder Aroldo Cavalcante's talk was very relatable for me because he said many missionaries learning languages say, "I can't speak for I am a child." This is exactly how I feel whenever I try to say something in Portuguese, but I am starting to be able to understand people that talk very, very slowly.

Kristin M. Yee said, "Real change might take multiple attempts." I really liked that one because adjusting to missionary life has been a little difficult and I know I just need to keep on trying to do my best even if it takes multiple tries to change.

The last talk I'll talk about is Bradley R. Wilcox. "It is one thing to be loved and another to be trusted." I loved this quote because it helps me know that God loves me so much if he is trusting me to be a missionary for 2 years. He also said, "Don't let the world change you when you were meant to change the world." This was definitely my favorite quote from conference because it reminds me that we need to be the light in the world, and we shouldn't be changing our standards to fit the world's. The world should be changing its standards to fit ours.

Anyways, thanks so much for listening to me. Feel free to email me with any questions or things you learned from conference at benson.plaster@missionary.org.

Tchau,
Elder Plaster

Editor's note: Here is a link to the talks that Benson is referring to: October 2024 general conference (churchofjesuschrist.org). General Conference only happens twice a year (April and October) and is a chance for us to hear the leaders of our church speak.
